Project Caterpillar: The Napkin Sketch for the Digital Age
Go from hand sketch to data-rich 3D model in just a few minutes? That’s what Project Caterpillar makes possible. Marc Durand of Atkins shares the story.
In many architectural firms, the senior architects with decades on the job are uncomfortable with new technology, while the junior architects can’t get enough of new technology but lack extensive professional experience. Marc Durand of Atkins explains how his team created an in-house app, code name Caterpillar, that converts simple hand sketches into full 3D models with rich data, enabling you to do things like run massing studies after just a few minutes of drawing. “It’s what the old napkin sketch used to be, where you could interact in real time,” he says. It enables junior and senior architects to collaborate easily and makes the power of the latest digital design technologies accessible to professionals at all ends of the tech-comfort spectrum.
