Attend a panel discussion led by Autodesk, Inc., subject-matter experts and architectural firms that are using the Dynamo visual programming language extension. Leave with an understanding of how the Dynamo extension is extending workflows based in Revit software and is helping architects to drive Computational Building Information Modeling (BIM) from the earliest stages.

Dynamic shifts have emerged in the digital realm of building design and physical methods of off-site fabrication. Buildings are increasingly manufactured/assembled rather than constructed/crafted. This class will present these digital procedures for modelling buildings in Revit whilst simultaneously assembling and managing your building components through Dynamo and into Inventor for fabrication. This entails navigating a hierarchy of linked/nested Revit models, families, and formulas; aligning the design BIM with detailed fabrication models in Inventor. Dynamo will be applied as a tool to automate, annotate, and design the building layout with assembled components. Orchestrate the building model, drawing sets, and work instructions in Revit alongside Dynamo to lay out building components, visualise building data, component relationships, and simultaneously assemble Revit components for building site context, component assembly in factory layout, and final modules in transportation.

Following a 12-year planning period, HOK was commissioned with the design of the Salt Lake City International Airport in Utah, considered one of the largest aviation projects under construction in the United States. In 2017, the airport launched a new 740,000-square-foot concourse expansion to the ongoing project, bringing the total area to 2.3 million square feet, with a total construction cost to $2.8 billion. This provided HOK with the opportunity to realign its BIM Execution Plan with a brand-new set of design technologies supporting big data, including A360 Collaboration for Revit cloud service, FormIt 360 software, Dynamo Studio software, Revizto, and Enscape. Learn how HOK re-evaluated, strategized, and adopted new technologies to enhance the collaborative design process; and hear what hurdles and opportunities appear when the cloud is pushed to the limits by projects of colossal dimensions.

This lab session will focus on some of the newer features of FormIt 360 Pro software, as well as tips and tricks to help with your FormIt 360 Pro workflow. We'll create a building with FormIt 360 Pro software using the Microsoft Windows app. We'll also spend some time understanding the Dynamo Studio workflow within FormIt 360 Pro for Windows software, and how we can use it for quick design iterations.

In architecture, technology and computers provide ways for us to produce and share design documentation. Until now, the profession has divided our work processes into a discovery phase with hand sketching and a production phase where the sketches are developed into computer-aided illustrations. Architectural design is currently experiencing a shift wherein there is an integration of hand sketching and technology into a single process. This course will demonstrate the ways in which computers can help us sketch and iterate our ideas, and how we can redefine sketching to include all drawing, direct modeling, and computational studies. “When I say artist I mean the man who is building things—creating molding the earth—whether it be the plains of the west—or the iron ore of Penn. Local governments are gradually more involved with 3D infrastructure designs: On one hand, they’re managing their existing infrastructure—like storm/sanitary sewers and aqueducts networks—through georeferenced databases. On the other hand, they’re designing their proposed infrastructures through Civil 3D objects. Civil 3D software never had a perfect fit to connect with geographic information system (GIS) data, from recreating existing 3D infrastructures to better connecting them with proposed designs. Then Dynamo came into the picture! This presentation will cover efficient workflows using Dynamo for Civil 3D, mapping electric utility GIS data to automatically create Civil 3D pipe network objects using a custom pipe catalog. We will also cover attribute transfers involving both object data and property sets.

Whether building for net zero or reducing building utility bills, distributed solar has become a common component of the modern design process. To consider photovoltaic, solar hot water, or passive solar from rooftop or remote panels, or to build integrated units in building design, designers need to understand solar-energy-generation potential as an integrated part of the design process. This class will show how to use built-in tools in Revit software and FormIt software to understand the potential of solar power from the very beginning of conceptual design, and to generate and analyze a complete solar design all the way to detailed panel layouts and efficiencies and their effects on overall building-energy performance. We will also show advanced processes using Dynamo solar analysis nodes to parameterize, automate, and optimize your solar power installation.

From designing retrofits in AutoCAD to automating Revit workflows using Dynamo, and now exploring the many uses of Forge, Build Change has been using Autodesk products for 17 years to revolutionize the design of resilient infrastructure, particularly in the housing sector, and successfully reach national scale in many countries. By leveraging the latest Autodesk tools, Build Change is making home retrofits safe and possible in the COVID-19 era. In this session, we will explore Build Change’s 17-year history of using Autodesk products to impact 600,000 lives across 24 countries, providing an integrated solution for improving the resiliency of homes and communities and preventing loss of life in natural disasters. This session will feature a case study of the work Build Change is doing in Colombia, one of our largest country programs, and the Autodesk technology being used to scale housing retrofits there.

Dynamo is capable of much more than patterning. In this class, we will cover the broad variety of possible applications for Dynamo and Dynamo Player, including NURBS, subdivision, and construction element generation tools, as well as tools to modify such geometry types. We will also provide insight into how to use Dynamo to exchange data live between VRED virtual reality (VR) and Alias software. Dynamo Player can help you create highly customized tools and increase the efficiency of the way you handle daily routine tasks in all kinds of different areas. Since the introduction of Dynamo Player in Alias 2021.2 software, each Alias release has come with a variety of new Dynamo and Dynamo Player tools. We’ll also share examples of how to use Dynamo and the Dynamo Player to create your own tools inside Alias.

This class will demonstrate how you can use Revit software for landscape architecture with some assistance from Dynamo extension. Attendees will get an overview of how to use Revit software features such as families to provide typical symbols in plan while providing opportunities for visualization, scheduling to provide quantities, and tagging to annotate consistent information. Going beyond the basics, we’ll use Dynamo extension to show advanced techniques to streamline the design process. This session features Revit and Dynamo Studio. AIA Approved

When adopted throughout a company, people can be intimidated by visual programming, Dynamo can feel confusing, and collaboration can be difficult. Therefore, managing Dynamo libraries is labor intensive. GitHub is widely used in software engineering for facilitating collaboration and consistency of code over time. However, it has never been applied in computational design. DynaHub—an open-source Dynamo extension that connects Dynamo to GitHub—bridges a gap by letting you push and pull automations and packages from a centralized and accessible repository. Any user or organization, through their GitHub account, can use the Dynamo scripts stored in their own repository, knowing that they are using the most recent and validated version. By adopting this strategy at Willow, we experienced an increase in productivity, confidence, and usage.

Do you work in Revit software every day and want to learn ways to work smarter? Do you want to use the design degree you paid for and actually do more design and less button mashing? Have you heard about Dynamo and used it a little but aren’t sure you’re getting the most out of the opportunity? In this class, we will demonstrate specific examples of process automation using Dynamo, Dynamo Player, and Revit, and examine and explain the logic and nodes used to create those solutions.

This session is not for people who are heavy Dynamo software users. This session is for people who aren’t programmers (visual or other), but from time to time may need to use Dynamo as part of their workflows. It’s also for people who have heard of Dynamo, or visual programming, but never thought it was something they could do (but it totally is!). It’s also for those who just don’t think Dynamo can help them in their everyday workflows (don’t be so sure). By the end of this session, you will have an introductory understanding of Dynamo. You will learn that Dynamo can be used to create geometry with parametric relationships, and that this geometry can then be pushed into a Revit software project or family using the Revit software database. You will learn that Dynamo can do more than just geometry. It can also help with everyday tasks like creating grids and levels, adding some trees to your site, performing an energy analysis, or even changing your text from sentence case to all CAPS. This lab is designed to show experienced users of software programming the API functions and practical examples of connecting new products, enhancing existing ones (Revit software), and understanding the geometry engine. We’ll also take a look at how to create custom user interface (UI) nodes. Users will develop an understanding of where the Dynamo extension stores various aspects of the underlying systems, and what templates you can set up to speed up your software development workflows. Whether you’re looking to build simple Zero Touch libraries, complex wrappers to third-party applications, of totally new UI functionality, this class will provide the foundations to help you take significant steps forward. Have you ever heard of the Dynamo visual programming language extension in Revit software and wanted to know what it was all about? The Dynamo extension is not just for tower twisters and super-advanced programmers—the Dynamo extension is for every Revit user. The Dynamo extension uses a visual programming language, but it is an easy language to understand. In this lab attendees will get very gradual doses of the Dynamo extension and its programming environment so they gain the skills to make the Dynamo extension work in their everyday workflows with Revit software. No programming experience or complex modeling experience needed to attend this lab. You only need a little Revit experience.
